What is Matrix Reflex Testing (MRT)?

Matrix Reflex Testing (MRT) is an energetic diagnostic method developed in 1998 by Dr. Luisa Williams. Drawing upon multiple traditions and pioneers in the field of energetic testing, MRT integrates the reflex arm length (AR) test from Dr. Raphael van Assche (Austria), electromagnetic field assessments inspired by Dr. Paul Nogier (France), and hand mode/channel techniques adapted from Dr. Alan Beardall. Dr. Williams also contributed original refinements to the system, including the MRT electromagnetic field (EMF) measurement, use of Mode Cards, and techniques to assess arm-length discrepancies, hand chakra signals, and six-channel entry patterns.

MRT evaluates changes in the body’s connective tissue—also called the matrix or ground substance—to help identify the root cause of illness, dysfunction, or pain. It provides practitioners with insights into what the body is truly responding to and how best to support healing.

Unlike standard muscle testing, which often relies on the autonomic nervous system, MRT is a more sensitive technique that focuses on the body’s extracellular and intracellular matrix environments. Research in electron microscopy has shown that nerves do not make direct contact with cells; instead, neurotransmitters, hormones, and nutrients move through this connective matrix. MRT offers a unique way to assess this space—where most biological communication occurs—making it especially useful for evaluating subtle hormonal or toxicological imbalances.

This understanding has roots as far back as 1845. As described in Matrix and Matrix Regulation by Drs. Pischinger and Heine, C.B. Reichert observed that it is the connective tissue, not nerves or blood vessels, that maintains direct contact with all parts of the body, serving as a vital medium for communication and metabolic exchange.
